GRANNY SQUARE

With A, use magic loop crochet method to create center ring.

Rnd 1 Working into the center ring, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2; rep from * twice more for a total of four 3-dc clusters and 3 ch-2 sp. Sl st into top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp—4 3-dc clusters + 4 ch-2 sp.

Rnd 2 Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into ch-2 sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; rep from * twice more, sl st into top of ch 3, into each of the next 2 dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.—8 3-dc clusters + 4 ch-1 sp + 4 ch-2 sp.

Rnd 3 Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into ch-2 sp, dc in each dc (skipping ch-1 sp) to next ch-2 sp, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc in each dc (skipping ch-1 sp) to next ch-2 sp; rep from * twice more, sl st into top of ch 3, into the next dc, and into the next ch-2 sp.—40 dc + 4 ch-2 sp.

Rnd 6 Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) into ch-2 sp, dc into each dc to ch-2 sp, *(2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, dc into each dc to ch-2 sp, sl st into top of ch 2.—88 dc + 4 ch-2 sp. Cut yarn, leaving long tail to seam sides of granny square.

BODY

Make 16 granny squares. Seam squares together in 4 vertical panels of 1 x 4 squares. Seam long side of 2 panels together for front, repeat for back. Arrange panels with wrong sides together, with a short side on top. Seam 2” section at top left and top right to form shoulders.

SIDE PANELS

With RS facing, join color C to bottom right corner of one panel.

Row 1 (RS) Ch 2 (does not count as st), *dc in first ch-2 sp, dc in each st along side of granny square, dc in last ch-2 sp; rep from * along entire right side of front and back panels, turn—192 sts.

Row 2 (WS) Ch 2, dc across row, turn. Rep last 2 rows 0 (1, 1) more time.

Row 3 Counting from bottom edge up, place marker on 75th st. Ch 5 (counts as 1 dc + ch-2 sp), sk 2 sts, dc in next st, *ch 2, sk 2 sts, dc in next st; rep from * to marker, turn.

**Rows 4-6 Ch 5, sk 1 dc and ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, *ch 2, sk ch-2 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * with last dc going into the 2nd ch of the turning ch from the previous row, turn. Repeat from ** 0 (0, 1) times. Fold tunic at shoulders with right sides together, and sl st the last row to the corresponding sts on the opposite panel to seam side. Turn right side out and repeat section for second side panel, beginning at bottom right corner of back panel.

FINISHING

With RS facing, join C at neckline edge of right shoulder seam and sc evenly around neck, sl st into first sc to join round. Fasten off. Rep for bottom edge of tunic. Weave in ends.

OPTIONAL SLEEVES

Work 8 granny squares as for body. Seam squares together in 2 panels of 2 x 2 squares. With RS facing, join color C to bottom right corner of one panel.

Row 1 (RS) Ch 2 (does not count as st), *dc in first ch-2 sp, dc in each st along side of granny square, dc in last ch-2 sp, rep from * up side of second square, turn—48 sts.

**Rows 2-5 Ch 2, dc across row, turn. Rep from ** 0 (1, 2) more times. Fold sleeve lengthwise with RS together and sl st to for sleeve tube. Turn right side out and seam sleeve to armhole. Join C at bottom edge of sleeve and sc evenly around cuff, and sl st to 1st sc to join. Fasten off. Rep from row 1 for second sleeve panel. Weave in ends.
