Yarn

1 3.5oz/100g (250y/228m) skein of Madeline Tosh Longrider DK (merino/nylon) in color Scout

Needles

One set US 2 (2.75mm) double pointed needles (dpn), or size needed to get gauge One set US 4 (3.5mm) double pointed needles

Materials

10 stitch markers, 1 in unique color
Tapestry needle

Gauge

24 sts and 32 rows = 4”/10cm in Stockinette stitch

Diameter of crown 10”/25.5cm
Diameter of opening 4.5”/11.5cm

I-CORD

Slip all stitches to a DPN. *With right side facing you, knit across all stitches with second DPN. Without turning work, slide all stitches to the right hand side of needle. Repeat from *. Each repeat is one row of I-cord.

HAT

With smaller needles, cast on 100 stitches and distribute 25 sts to each of 4 DPNS. Join to work in the round.

Rnds 1-6 Knit.
Rnds 7-9 *K1tbl, p1, rep from * to end of round.

Place Markers

Changing to larger needles, *k10, pm; rep from * to end of round, using different color marker to mark the beginning of the round.

SHAPE BRIM

**Inc Rnd *Knit to marker, YO, SM; rep from * to end—10 stitches inc’d.

Next Rnd Knit to end, knitting the YOs tbl and slipping markers as you come to them.

Repeat from ** 8 more times—190 sts.

Knit 1 round, moving each marker one stitch to the left. If you prefer a slouchier beret, knit more rows here to make a wider crown.

SHAPE CROWN

**Dec Rnd 1 *Knit until 2 sts before marker, k2tog, sm; rep from * to end—10 sts dec’d.

Knit 1 round, slipping the markers as you come to them.

Rep from ** until 10 sts remain. Remove all markers during the following round.

Dec Rnd 2 Ssk to end of round—5 sts.

Work I-cord for 1”/2.5cm. Cut yarn, leaving a tail at least 6”/15cm long. Thread tail through remaining stitches and pull to close. Weave in ends and block gently.
