2 (2, 2, 3, 3) skeins (100g/420yds) of Madeline Tosh Merino Light in butter (MC, yellow)
1 (1, 1, 2, 2) skein each in antler (CC1, white), whiskey barrel (CC2, brown), orange creamsicle (CC3, orange), twisted (CC4, purple)

NEEDLES

One pair US 6 (4mm) needles, or size needed to get gauge
One pair US 3 (3.25mm) 24” circular needle

NOTES

1. MC is held double to create an even fabric weight compared to fair isle. All other colors held single.

2. Front panel is wider than the back, causing “side” seams to sit towards back of piece.

3. Twist yarns in back of work to prevent holes when working intarsia.

4. Larger yellow/checker motif is knit intarsia, and smaller brown/white checker chart is knit fair isle. Checker chart will pull in significantly.

FRONT

With larger needles and MC held double, cast on 18 sts. Change to CC1 held single, cast on 18 sts. Continue alternating between MC and CC1 every 18 sts until 108 (126, 144, 162, 180) sts have been cast on.

Row 1 (WS) Purl all, working in large checker pattern with MC held double and CC1.

Row 2 (RS) Cont working all MC held double, and begin small checker chart with CC1 and CC2 in alternating squares. Continue in patt, working MC square and checker chart for 1 (2, 2, 3, 4) chart repeats. Begin next chart repeat, placing marker at center of row. On chart rows 0 (9, 9, 9+13, 9+13+17), work increase row as follows, changing color when necessary:

Increase Row (RS) Work in patt to 1 st before m, m1L, k1, sm, k1, m1R, work in patt to end—0 (2, 2, 4, 6) sts inc. Complete chart, and repeat once more. On chart rows 0 (5, 5+7+9, 5+7+9, 1+3+5+7+9) work increase row—0 (2, 6, 6, 10) sts inc. Continue chart. Beginning on row 11, work increase row every other row to end of chart, stopping before final WS row—8 sts inc, 116 (138, 160, 180, 204) sts.

RIGHT LEG

Note: Chart rows are in sequential order for increases spanning more than one repeat.

Next Row (WS) Work in patt to marker, remove marker. Place following sts on holder. Turn to work right leg—58 (69, 80, 90, 102) sts.

Begin chart rep once (once, twice, twice, thrice) more, decreasing on chart rows 5+11+17 (5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17+7+15) as follows: Decrease Row (RS) K2 in patt, ssk, work in patt to end—1 st dec. 55 (66, 75, 85, 95) sts remain. Place stitches on holder.

LEFT LEG

Slip left leg sts from scrap yarn to larger needles.

Next Row (WS) Work row 18 of chart. Begin chart rep once (once, twice, twice, thrice) more, decreasing on chart rows 5+11+17 (5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17, 7+15+5+11+17+7+15) as follows: Decrease Row (RS) K in patt to last 4 sts, k2tog, work in patt to end—1 st dec. 55 (66, 75, 85, 95) sts remain. Place stitches on holder.

BACK

With larger needles and CC1, cast on 18 sts. Change to MC held double, cast on 18 sts. Continue alternating between MC and CC1 every 18 sts until 72 (90, 108, 126, 144) sts have been cast on.

Row 1 (WS) Purl all, working the same large checker pattern.
Row 2 (RS) Begin small checker chart with CC1 and CC2, and cont working all MC held double in alternating squares. Continue in stockinette, working MC square and checker chart for 2 (3, 3, 3, 4) chart repeats. Begin next chart repeat, placing marker at center of row. On rows 11+13 (7+9+11, 7+9+11, 13+17, 13+17) of chart, increase as follows: Increase Row (RS) Work in patt to 1 st before m, m1L, k1, sm, k1, m1R, work in patt to end—2 sts inc. Continue chart. Beginning on row 15 (13, 13, 0, 0) work increase row every row to end of chart—84 (108, 126, --, --) sts.

FINISHING

Use mattress stitch to sew side seams, inseams, and crotch.

LEG TRIM

Slip all stitches from one leg opening to smaller circular needles. With CC3, knit 6 rows in the round and bind off. Repeat for second leg.

WAISTBAND

With smaller circular needles and CC4, pick up and knit 180 (216, 252, 288, 324) sts and join for working in the round. Knit one round. Next Rnd *K1, p1; rep from * to end. Repeat last round 14 times. Bind off in pattern.
