That's A Stretch: For Fingers

BIG DAY, one and all: we’re unrolling a new series here on Knit Wit and we’re calling it That’s A Stretch. It’s all about undoing all the gnarly, nasty, hunchy, achy stuff that crafting can do to that body of yours. Today, we’re starting with those humbling crafting pals, your hands and fingers. These guys get so badly abused—let’s stretch ‘em out.

The Table Stretch

Rest your fingers (or your whole hand, depending on how creaky you may be feeling) on a table or against an open bit of wall. Start by holding your fingers tight together, then lift your arm and wrists away from the table (or wall), hinging at the base of your fingers. Hold or pulse there, then try the movement again, this time with your fingers splayed out.


Upward Fingers Stretch

Push your fingers with your opposite hand back towards your wrists. You can also use your thumb to straighten the stretched fingers from the back by pushing against your knuckles. For an added challenge, straighten the arm of the fingers your stretching. It should add a nice forearm stretch/tingle in there, too.

Finger Press Stretch

This stretch is best done standing. If that’s not an option, sitting upright with good posture should also work well. Start by bringing your hands together in a praying gestures. Pull your palms and fingers apart so that only your fingertips are now touching and begin to apply fairly strong pressure (always use your own tolerance and flexibility as a gauge of course!). As you’re applying this firm pressure, feel it radiate through your arms and eventually up and across your shoulder blades. With good, straight posture and the firm pressure, you’ll end up with a nice mini upper back stretch as well!
